Living the dream?

21/01/2015
After many years of visiting the island, we’ve finally taken the plunge and moved permanently to the Isle of Skye. The reasons are pretty obvious (to me at least!) – the landscape is stunning, we want to explore the rest of Scotland and the Western Isles much more and really want to immerse myself in a landscape that truly inspires…. Of all the places I’ve visited in the UK, Skye is the place that has always had the strongest pull, and I feel privileged and just a bit lucky to be sitting here looking at Beinn na Caillich, writing this.
Choosing where to live on the island took some pondering. The idea of a remote, traditional cottage appealed, but the reality of the weather, simple necessities like food/fuel and just because I’m probably a soft southerner, we chose a more sensible option.
So, we’re now living just outside Broadford, giving relatively easy access to the whole of the island, along with the mainland (it’s only around 10 minutes from the Skye bridge), in a comfortable, quite modern and (most importantly) centrally heated house.
The other great news is that you could join me here (well, at least for a week or two) as we have a self-contained holiday let on site. It’s perfect for one or two people; it’s got under-floor heating and all mod cons! I’ll be updating the details and facilities over the next few weeks, but take a look at the website here...
If you want to visit you can either simply stay in the luxury of the holiday let to give you a base for exploring the island or I can also offer tuition and photo advice tailored to your exact needs. This can range from beginner camera settings and composition to more advanced exposure, filter use and advice on how to plan, shoot and edit a landscape shoot. I can also help if you want to learn time-lapse or video techniques. Alternatively, if you just need some pointers in the best places to shoot or what the weather is likely to do, I can offer my knowledge of the landscapes of the island to help you find the best spots and times to shoot them.
If you want to know more just drop me an email on the contact form if you’ve got any questions, and remember to keep an eye on the website for updates once we have everything in place, and I look forward to seeing you on the beautiful and inspirational Isle of Skye.
